How Does OOMA Work?

If you’re in the 202 area code (Washington D.C.) and you call the 303 area code (Colorado), the Ooma device in your home would send your voice from your phone over the Internet to another OOMA device in the home of another user in Colorado. At that point, the device in Colorado would dial that user’s phone line to complete your call over the local telephone network. It is basically P2P (Peer to Peer) networking. Your Voice is encrypted before it leaves your OOMA device and decrypted at the end device before being routed to the land line you called.

Why bother with this type of system? Because Ooma (or you) won’t have to pay local phone companies to route calls or tarriffs on any calls. The is a significant part of the expense of running a VOIP company like Vonage or SunRocket. Indeed, the company hopes to offer customers unlimited free long distance if they buy its device. Ultimately, Ooma plans to charge a one-time fee for around $199 for a device providing unlimited long-distance calls thereafter. While more people buy a OOMA, prices will fall significantly.

For the system to work, Ooma must spread its devices far and wide, so that there are a sufficient number of devices in place to redirect Internet calls onto a local network. To build that user base, OOMA has launched a successful beta period in which it gave away devices to select users, whom it called White Rabbits.

Until a sufficient base is in place, Ooma plans to cover the costs that will accrue when users place long distance calls to a city or region where there are no other OOMA devices to receive and redirect them, a company spokeswoman said.

Still, this plan raises a number of questions: will users pay an up-front fee around $399 for unlimited phone service, especially given the recent SunRocket debacle? After all, many of SunRocket’s customers paid $199 for a year of unlimited phone service and face uncertain fates in light of the company’s closure. And if customers are willing to take a risk, is it worth the bother to save on long distance charges when they still must maintain local service?

The "Internet telephone" VOIP business has proven a brutally competitive when given the hard push by deep-pocketed cable and telecommunications companies, which already have long-standing relationships with customers.

OOMA Multiple Phone Numbers

Primere users can have multiple different phone numbers. Logged in to the OOMA lounge you have the ability to add phone numbers to your OOMA phone service. DO you have family across the United States which call you often? Set up a phone number in their calling area so they do not have to pay toll fees. Want your company phone to be located in Washington D.C.? You can have that too just by choosing a phone number in that area code. Also you can choose different ring tones for each phone number to alert you which phone line is ringing.

You also have the ability to route all calls from any OOMA phone number to any other phone such as your cell phone. Or have your OOMA service send you text SMS to your cell phone or notify you by email when you recieve voice mail.

Fun with caller ID

NOTE: When first setting up OOMA you get to input what you want your outbound caller ID to display. You could even have displayed "UNKNOWN" as your caller ID name. Those who believe they have a caller ID block (meaning callers have to input *67 to show your caller ID) will wonder why you are not getting blocked, in actuality, this is your caller ID! OOMA will allow you to change your caller ID for a one time fee per change of $9.00

OOMA Privacy

One of the best parts about OOMA's premiere service is the unique ability to block unwanted calls, phone numbers, and add the power of community blocklists to stop unwated calls from ringing to your home or business. Once logged into the OOMA lounge, you have the ability to enable call blocklists. As you can see all it takes is for you to check the boxes to enable call block lists. If you havent yet, watch the blocklist video which demonstrates: Anonymous callers - Block those which try to hide their phone numbers from being visible to caller ID. Community Block lists - Block phone numbers which others have reported as being telemarketers or Robocallers, Custom Blocklists - Create your own custom blocklists of phone numbers which you o not want caling you.

Further, you have the ability to have any of the phone numbers on the blocklists either be blocked with an automatic voice notification to the caller or have the caller be sent directly to voice mail.

Check your Phone Logs - Logged in to the OOMA lounge, you can view all your incomming and outgoing phone logs. You have the ability to use these logs to block future calls from a specific number, adding them to your custom blocklist.

Caller-ID and Blocking Caller-ID

ooma provides caller-ID and caller-ID blocking at no charge. Please note that your telephone handset must have a display to show caller-ID information.

Inbound Caller-ID

If you're using the ooma system without a landline, ooma will provide incoming caller-ID at no charge. If you're using the ooma system with a landline back-up, you'll need to get caller-ID service through your landline phone company.

Outbound Caller-ID Blocking

From the ooma Lounge, you can set whether or not you want your name displayed on outbound calls. You can also choose which of your shared or personal numbers you wish to display. If you choose to disable outbound caller-ID, you can still enable it for individual calls by dialing the prefix *82 prior to placing the call.

During activation, your caller-ID will be set to use the name you registered your ooma account with.  If you wish to change an existing outgoing caller-ID name, you can do so for a one-time charge of $11.99. Caller-ID names are processed within 5 business days.

OOMA Security

The OOMA people say: "The OOMA system uses the latest security and data encryption technologies to securely deliver user calls. As a result, ooma is as secure as a traditional land line...." Not so fast. OOMA is secure and OOMA is not secure. Granted your voice is encrypted before it leaves your OOMA device in route to another OOMA device... However it is the exit device where the vulnerability lies. An attacker could set up a listening station / sniffer on the end of his OOMA and eavesdrop on your conversation. Now could the attacker get your IP address? Depends on how many hops the OOMA device does while routing your call. If it is just one then quite percieveably yes, and very easily. If there are two or more then it would be a little harder. Now if the attacker set up a man-in-the-middle sniffer, he could capture enough packets to break the encryption. If the OOMA device changes encryption keys for every call then this would make breaking the encryption harder. Basically the longer you stay on the phone, the more packets captured, eventually enough to break the encryption.

"All service traffic (including voice traffic) to and from ooma's central servers is securely encrypted.  Note for ooma systems used with landlines: local calls are typically forwarded through your existing landline connection" (if you decide to retain one).

OOMA VOIP traffic is encrypted with 256bit encryption

2/22/09 conversation with OOMA tech support confirmed an attacker could set up a network sniffer on an OOMA end point device and capture phone calls made through the OOMA device. Of course this only if the attacker is terminating calls though his/her OOMA connected to a landline. If his OOMA device was simply forwarding a call to another OOMA device (In route to the specific area the call was placed to), the traffic would be encrypted and thus almost impossible to break.

OOMA Protocols & Ports

OOMA QOS - Quality of Service

If you place OOMA behind your router you should open these ports and place the OOMA Mac address with high priority. OOMA uses the following ports and protocols for data and voice traffic:

UDP 1194,
UDP 3480,  UDP 514,  UDP 49000-50000,

TCP 443

OOMA Network Setup

Using an RJ-45 Network cable, you can connect a computer to the HOME port on back of the OOMA.

Open your browser and type:  http://www.setup.ooma.com. This will bring you to the OOMA advanced setup screen. Here you can use custom network settings and adjust the QOS settings to your liking. This is completely optional, normally the OOMA device is set to DHCP enabling the OOMA to obtain an IP address automatically.

OOMA outside of the United States?

Can I use the ooma system internationally?

The ooma system can be used anywhere there is a high-speed Internet connection. Regardless of where you use it, calls to the US will be free and calls outside the US will be subject to low-cost international rates. If you plan to use the device overseas, be sure to use a phone that meets US standards, and be aware that the power supply that comes with the ooma Hub is built for US power specifications. Also, if you choose to install and use the ooma system outside the US, you'll be solely responsible for compliance with international laws and subject to all associated fees, taxes, tariffs, and legal penalties.

Suggested cordless telephones

You can use a cordless telephone which the base device will plug into your OOMA. Accessory handsets can be placed anywhere throughout your home without any connection to the OOMA device. We recommend cordless phones with no answering machine. Your OOMA device has a built in answering machine therefore it is not necessary to pay extra money for a useless feature you will not need. DECT 6.0 cordless phones provide the best range, and do not interfere with wireless B/G/N standards.

 Positives:

  • Very configurable.
  • Easy to install.
  • Easy to block unwanted calls.
  • Multiple phone lines.
  • Lots of features with Premiere service for a low monthly price.
  • Otherwise, FREE!
  • Clear connection.
  • Pays for itself in longrun, no phone bill.

Negatives:

  • Initial investment cost pricey?
  • New start up company, will it last?
  • Power goes out, so does phone service.
  • Security vulnerabilities still being tested.
  • Usually 10 minute wait for phone support.
  • Less secure than landline
