For 2010 Gata has made some changes to thier Antivirus software. The price for the software has significantly dropped, one scanning engine changed, and the gui has been revamped.

Setting up was easy and straight forward. The installation file is a whopping 254mb. Pretty large, but to pack in dual antivirus engines, this is not such a surprise. The noticable difference between previous versions is that Gdata dropped the Kaspersky engine and now uses a combination of engines:  A: Bitdefender, and engine B: Avast. We prefered having the Kaspersky engine due to its proven track record in previous cleaning tests. Speaking with a representative from Gdata, this move was in response to performance issues with KAS and dual engine functionality. Gdata, is now much faster scanning files and http streams.

Gdata 2010 has a more streamlined GUI and faster scanning rates than previous versions. These are big improvements from the 2008 version, which was sluggish, and slowed most PCs down to almost an unacceptable state. Our tests were conducted on windows XP with an Intel dual core processor and 4 gigs of RAM. Surfing the internet was noticably faster than the 2008 version, with both engines fully active.

After a clean unpatched install of XP, we set out to find some malware linked in some of our spam mail. Clicking through enough Viagra sites, and links telling us that some poor soul needed our help to inherit his multimillion dollar fortue, we soon found ourselves infected with pop ups and redirects. We then installed Gdata, updated it, and began the scan which took 22 minutes. Gdata cleaned everything, scanning each file with both antivirus engines. However Gdata 2010 did leave trace benign registry entries from the malware. Nothing we couldnt manually remove ourselves, or perhaps a registry cleaner couldnt find and clean.

Fine tuning of Gdata's settings can be made by clicking on the "options" links in the main control panel. 

Email option settings are designed to be used with Outlook, Thunderbird, or other email aggergators. You will have to set which ports you want Gdata to monitor when using your email program. Below are the default settings.

Overall, Gdata 2010 has proven itself to be one of the best antivirus solutions. It's detection rate is still #1 among all antivirus competitors thanks to its dual antivirus engine functionality, advanced heuristics and behavior analysis. Gdata 2010 is extremely user friendly and straight forward, for any user.
